BIOGRAPHY OF KARL MAX

INTRODUCTION

  • Karl Max  was a German philosopher, Economist, Sociologist and Revolutionary.
  • He is best known for his theories of “Marxism” which laid the foundation for Communism.
  • He is considered as one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century.
  • His ideas  had a lasting impact on global politics and economics.

A WALK THROUGH HIS LIFE

  • He was born in Trier, Germany in 1818 to a Jewish family.
  • He was the third of nine children born to a middle-class family.
  • His Father  Heinrich  was a Lawyer and his Mother Henriette was a Homemaker.
  • He was educated at the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin  where he studied law, philosophy and history.
  • After completing his studies, he worked as a journalist and editor for various radical newspapers.
  •  He was influenced by the philosophical ideas of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Ludwig Feuerbach.
  • In 1848, He wrote “The Communist Manifesto” with Friedrich Engels.
  •  In this work  he outlined his vision of a society in which the means of production are owned by the community and the distribution of goods and services is based on the principle of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need”.
  • He believed that the Workers own the means of production and that the Government should work to ensure that everyone had an equal share of resources.
  • He argued that a society based on these principles would be free from exploitation and abuse.
  • In 1848, He was exiled to London due to his involvement in the failed German Revolution.
  • In 1850,In London where he wrote the “Das Kapital (Capital)”.
  • In Das Kapital,He suggested that “a revolution was needed to overthrow the capitalist system and establish a new society based on communism”.
  • In 1867, he returned to Germany, where he continued to write and teach until his death in 1883.
  • His writings had a major influence on the development of the communist movement in Russia and his ideas were influenced by Vladimir Lenin.
  • After the Russian Revolution, The Soviet Union was based on Max’s theories and his writings  became the basis of the Marxist-Leninist ideology.
  • His theories have been used to shape economic and social policies in many countries and his writings have served as a source of inspiration for many political and social movements.
  • His writings and theories have a lasting impact on the development of economic and political thought.
  • He was also an advocate for international socialism and was a leader of the First International (1864-1876).
  • He died in London in 1883.
