BIOGRAPHY OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

INTRODUCTION

  • Swami Vivekananda  was an Indian Hindu Monk,Spiritual Teacher and a main contributer in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.
  • He was a major contributor in the come back of Hinduism in India and also contributed to the idea of Nationalism in colonial India.
  • Vivekananda founded the “Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission”.
  • His Birthday on 12th January is celebrated as “National Youth Day”.

A WALK THROUGH HIS HOLY LIFE

  • Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Datta in Calcutta on 12 January 1863.
  • He was born into a Bengali family of the Vaishnava tradition.
  •  As a boy, He was good Knowledge in the traditional Hindu scriptures especially the Vedas and the Upanishads.
  • At the age of 17, he met the famous 19th century Saint Ramakrishna who later became his spiritual mentor and guru.
  • He was influenced by his guru, Ramakrishna from whom he learnt that all living beings were a symbol of the God and therefore service to God could be offered by service to Mankind.
  •  After the death of Ramakrishna in 1886, Vivekananda travelled all around  India and the West lecturing the message of Vedanta.
  • In 1893, Vivekananda represented India and Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. His famous address began: “Sisters and Brothers of America,” which received a standing ovation in Chicago Conference.
  • Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes  passing messages of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe.
  • His speech’s and messages helped to connect a relation between East and West.
  • He was an influential figure in the Hindu rebirth of the late 19th century and his teachings have been influential in shaping modern Hinduism.
  •  He is often referred to as the “patriot saint” of modern India.
  • He is credited with inspiring the devotion of millions of Indians to their motherland and for inspiring the freedom movement of India that eventually led to India’s independence from the British Raj.
  • His teachings have been a source of inspiration to many spiritual seekers  and his legacy  still continues.
  • He died on 1902.
