Victor-Marie Hugo was a French Writer and Politician.

• He is considered  as one of the greatest French writers of all time.

• He was at the forefront of the Romantic Literary Movement with his plays “Cromwell” and “Hernani”.

  • He was born on February 26, 1802 in Besançon,Eastern France.
  • He was the youngest son of Joseph Leopold Sigisbert Hugo and Sophie Trebuchet.
  • He was an atheist and a strong supporter of the Republic Party.
  • In 1817,He wrote a poem for a competition organized by the French Academy, for which He received an honorable mention.
  • In 1819, He and his brothers began publishing a periodical called Le Conservateur Literature.
  • His first collection of poems (Odes et poésies diverses) was published in 1822 when he was only 20 and He received a royal award from  King Louis XVIII.
  • His first mature fiction was published in February 1829 by Charles Gosselin without the author’s name.
  • In 1827,He became the leader of the Romantic literary movement with his play Cromwell .
  • He began planning a major novel about social misery and injustice as early as 1830.
  • In 1841, He was elected to the French Academy.
  • In 1845, He entered the Upper Chamber of Parliament as a representative of France.
  • As a Politician,He spoke  against the death penalty and social injustice.
  • His demand of the abolition of the death penalty was internationally renowned.
  • In 1848, He was elected to the National Assembly of the Second Republic as a conservative.
  • In 1849,He broke with the conservatives when he delivered a remarkable speech calling for an end to misery and poverty.
  • He was exiled from France for his conflict with the Conservatives.
  • His exile lasted until the return of Independence and the reconstruction of the Republic in 1870.
  • In 1871,He became a deputy in the National Assembly .
  • He died on 22nd May ,1885.
