BALAMANI AMMA was an INDIAN POET From “GOD’S OWN COUNTRY”KERALA.
She is referred as AMMA and “MUTHASSI” of Malayalam poetry.
She was the mother of the famous writer “KAMALA SURAYYA”

BALAMANI AMMA was born on 19th July 1909 in PUNNAYURKULAM, THRISSUR, KERALA.
She did not attend any school. Her uncle “NALAPAT NARAYANA MENON” collection of books helped her to become a poet.
She started writing poem at a very young age.
In 1930,She published her first poem “KOOPUKAI”.
She became popular among the people when she relieved the award “SAHITYA NIPUNA PURASKARAM” from the “RULER OF COCHIN KINGDOM”
In 1928,She was married to V.M NAIR.Later V.M.NAIR became the managing director of the famous Malayalam newspaper “MATHRUBHUMI”.
“NIVEDYAM” is the collection of poems of her work during 1959 to 1986.
After the death of her uncle “NALAPAT NARAYANA MENON” She wrote the poem “LOKANTHARAN GALIL” dedicated to her uncle.
In 1987 she received “PADMA BHUSHAN”
She died on 2004,suffering from “ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE”.
