CHARLIE CHAPLIN

  INTRODUCTION  

  • SIR CHARLES SPENCER CHAPLIN was a British Comic Actor, Film Maker and Composer.
  • His character “THE TRAMP” becomes a famous figure of the “SILENT-FILM AGE”.
  • He is considered as one of the “greatest stars of the 20th century”.
  • “MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY” is his Autobiography published in,1964.

“A WALK THROUGH HIS LIFE” 

  • CHARLES SPENCER CHAPLIN was born in LONDON,ENGLAND, on 16th April 1889.
  • During his child hood, his mother “Hannah” who was a singer and his father gets separated.
  • Thus CHAPLIN and his brother SYDNEY stayed with their Mother.
  • During a stage show, his mother lost her voice in the middle of a song. To keep the audience calm, the production manager pushed the “Five Year Old” Chaplin onto the stage to replace his mother.
  • Five-year-old Chaplin with his natural presence and comedy charred the audience. this was his first stage performance.
  • After this, his mother’s voice never returned, and their family can out of money.
  • In 1897,using his Mother Contacts, he opened dance troupe named as “EIGHT LANCA SHIRE LADS ‘but the troupe was not successful.
  • His first acting was as a “Pageboy “in a  production of SHERLOCK HOLMES.
  • In 1908,he joined with another troupe and acted in the role of the “DRUNK “in the comedy show “A NIGHT IN AN ENGLISH MUSICALL”
  • His performance gets the attention of the audience and a film producer “MACK SENNETT” signed a contract with him for 150 a week.
  • In 1914, he made his film entrance in the move “MAKE A LIVING”
  • He then shifted to UNITED STATES.
  • In 1914  itself, his all-time great character “THE LITTLE TRAMP” was introduced in the move “KID AUTO RACES AT VENICE”.
  • During 1915,he appeared in the 35 movies and he joined the “ESSANAY COMPANY” who agreed to pay him 1,250 a week.
  • During his first year in ESSANAY COMPANY, he acted in 14 films including the great hit “THE TRAMP”.
  • By the age of 26,he became a “SUPER STAR”.
  • In 1916,he moved from ‘ESSANAY COMPANY” to the “MUTUAL COMPANY” which agreed to pay him 10,000 a week.
  • Some of his best works like ONE A.M[1916] THE RINK[1916]EASY STREET[1917]were released during this  time.
  • In 1919,he along with his friends started a company named as “UNITED ARTISTS”.
  • His great movies-A WOMAN IN PARIS[1923],THE GOLD RUSH[1923],THE CIRCUS[1928]were all released  by the “UNITED ARTISTS”.
  • Same of his later works include-
  • CITY LIGHTS[1931]
  • MODERN TIMES[1936]
  • THE GREAT DICTATOR[1940].
  • His communist support during the COLD WAR provoked the other parties. As a result, he was  banned from entering UNITED STATES.
  • Thus CHAPLIN said good bye to the UNITED STATES and settled in SWITZERLAND.
  • In 1967,his final film.”A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG” was released.
  • In 1972,he made a last visit to the UNITED STATES to receive an “HONORARY ACADEMY AWARD”.
  • In 1975,he was honoured by “QUEEN ELIZABETH 2nd”
  • In December 25,1977, he died at his home in SWITZERLAND.
  • CHAPLIN’S body was stolen by two men from his grave who demanded 4,00,000 for its return. The men were arrested later  and CHAPLIN’S body was recovered after 11 weeks .
