RAKESH SHARMA is the first and only INDIAN Citizen to reach outer space on April 2,1984.
His work in space was focused on the areas of Bio medicine and remote sensing.
He is the first INDIAN to be awarded with “HERO OF SOVIET UNION AWARD”.

RAKESH SHARMA was born on 13th JANUARY 1949 in PATIALA,PUNJAB,INDIA.
He joined INDIAN AIR FORCE as a test pilot in 1970.
He was selected as a COSMONAUT to go into space as a joint program between INDIAN AIR FORCE and SOVIET SPACE PROGRAM.
In 1984,he entered space in a Rocket named “SOYUZT-11″launched from SOVIET UNION with two other cosmonauts.
He spent 7 days,21 hours and 40 minutes in space.
When MAHATMA GANDHI asked him how INDIA looked from outer space, he replied “SARA JAHAN SE ACCHA”[THE BEST IN THE WORLD].
He retired with the rank of WING COMMANDER.
