- He was born in Trier, Germany in 1818 to a Jewish family.
- He was the third of nine children born to a middle-class family.
- His Father Heinrich was a Lawyer and his Mother Henriette was a Homemaker.
- He was educated at the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin where he studied law, philosophy and history.
- After completing his studies, he worked as a journalist and editor for various radical newspapers.
- He was influenced by the philosophical ideas of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Ludwig Feuerbach.
- In 1848, He wrote “The Communist Manifesto” with Friedrich Engels.
- In this work he outlined his vision of a society in which the means of production are owned by the community and the distribution of goods and services is based on the principle of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need”.
- He believed that the Workers own the means of production and that the Government should work to ensure that everyone had an equal share of resources.
- He argued that a society based on these principles would be free from exploitation and abuse.
- In 1848, He was exiled to London due to his involvement in the failed German Revolution.
