- Thiruvalluvar, also known as Valluvar was a famous Tamil poet and philosopher.
- He is believed to have lived between the 4th and 5th centuries.
- Some scholars believe he was born in Mylapore in the present-day Indian state of Tamil Nadu, while others suggest he may have been born in Thirunelveli.
- Little is known about his life, and it is believed that he was either a Jain or Hindu.
- He is best known for his masterpiece “TIRUKKURAL” which is considered as one of the greatest works of Tamil literature and is widely studied in South India.
- Thiruvalluvar is believed to have been a weaver by trade, and he is thought to have composed the Tirukkural while weaving.
- The TIRUKKURAL is a collection of 1,330 couplets(set of two).The couplets focus on human values, morality, and ethics.
- TIRUKKURAL is mainly divided into three sections:
1)VIRTUE 2)WEALTH 3)LOVE
- The Thirukkural is widely recognized as a guidebook for everyday life, and it is still studied by both scholars and followers.
- He is said to have been deeply religious and his works have been used by many Hindu and Jain scholars to explain the principles of Dharma.
- Thiruvalluvar’s philosophical works have had a deep influence on Tamil culture and his writings are considered very precious.
- In 2000, the Government of India issued a stamp in his honor.
- A Temple devoted to him was built in Mylapore in 2002.
- Thiruvalluvar is highly respected in Tamil Nadu and there are several monuments dedicated to him.
