INTRODUCTION
- Vayalar Ramavarma popularly known as Vayalar was an Indian poet.
- He is one of the most influential poets and lyricists in Malayalam literature.
- He was known for his simple, beautiful and meaningful lyrics which often contained social messages.
A WALK THROUGH HIS LIFE
- He was born on March 28, 1928 in the small village of Vayalar near Alappuzha,Kerala.
- His Parents were Vayalar Raghavan Pillai and Lakshmi Antharjanam.
- He grew up in a traditional Brahmin family and his father was a Sanskrit scholar.
- His early years were spent in the rural environment which later became the source of inspiration for his works.
- He was educated at local schools and later studied at the Government Arts College in Kozhikode.
- Vayalar began writing poetry in his early teenage years.
- In 1945,His first publication which was a collection of poems titled “Kavitakal”was published.
- He graduated from S.D. College, Alappuzha, and then moved to Thiruvananthapuram in search of a job.
- He worked as a clerk in the Government secretariat for a few years before becoming a full-time lyricist.
- Later, He wrote songs for Films and Stage plays, which were well received.
- He wrote songs for over 200 films and many of these are considered classics in Malayalam cinema.
- He also wrote several novels, short stories and plays.
- He wrote more than 700 songs in his career.
- He also wrote several works of poetry including Aayisha, Utsavappattu and Nalacharitam which featured themes of love, nature, and life.
- His works are often noted for their great philosophical and spiritual themes.
- He was also a social activist and actively campaigned for social reforms and the upliftment of the lower castes.
- He received numerous awards including the “Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award,” the “Padma Shri,Padma Bhushan” and the “National Film Award for Best Lyrics”.
- He also received the “Kerala State Film Award” numerous times.
- He passed away on October 27, 1975in 1975, at the age of 47.
- He is remembered today as one of the most famous and influential lyricists in Malayalam literature.
- He is remembered affectionately by the Malayali community and his works continue to influence and inspire many.
