Nipah virus – നിപ വൈറസ്

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus that is capable of infecting humans and other animals. It is an emerging virus that was first identified in 1998, in Malaysia and Singapore. The primary reservoir of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, although pigs have been known to act as intermediate hosts. Infection with NiV can cause a range of symptoms in humans, from asymptomatic infection to fatal encephalitis. Treatment for humans is largely supportive, and there is no vaccine available. However, there are measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of infection, such as avoiding contact with sick animals and avoiding consumption of fruits that may have been contaminated by bats.
