Ardipithecus ramidus is a species of extinct hominid that lived approximately 4.4 million years ago in what is now Ethiopia. It is the earliest known species of hominid and the most complete specimen of a hominid ancestor prior to the emergence of Homo sapiens. Ardipithecus ramidus was bipedal, had grasping hands, and was likely a scavenger. Its brain size and dentition indicate that it was omnivorous, but its diet likely consisted mainly of fruit and other plant matter. Its small body size and short legs suggest that it was not a fast runner and was probably not very adept at hunting.
