Homo habilis is an extinct species of the genus Homo that lived approximately 2.1 to 1.5 million years ago. It is believed to be the first species of the Homo genus, and is thought to be the ancestor of both Homo erectus and Homo sapiens. Homo habilis is characterized by its relatively small brain size, estimated to be 650 cm3, and by its associated stone tools, which are the oldest stone tools discovered. Its body size was likely similar to that of a chimpanzee, and it had an ape-like appearance.
