A separating funnel is a piece of laboratory equipment used to separate two immiscible liquids. This can be done by taking advantage of their different densities. To separate kerosene and water using a separating funnel, the two liquids are poured into the funnel. The kerosene, being less dense, will collect at the top of the funnel, while the water will sink to the bottom. The kerosene can then be drawn off, leaving the water behind.
