Earth is a naturally occurring conductor and so it is commonly used to provide a reference for electrical circuits. This reference is known as grounding or earthing. In electrical systems, grounding or earthing provides a path for stray currents and other electrical disturbances to flow to the earth. Grounding also helps protect equipment from electrical surges and prevents damage from occurring.
