Chloroplasts are organelles found in plant cells and other eukaryotic organisms that conduct photosynthesis, the process of converting light energy into chemical energy. They contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that absorbs the light energy needed for photosynthesis. Chloroplasts are surrounded by a double membrane and have an internal system of membranes, known as the thylakoid membrane system, which contains the chlorophyll.
