Nuclear energy is the energy released from the nucleus of an atom. It is created when the nucleus of an atom splits (nuclear fission) or is combined (nuclear fusion). Nuclear energy can be used to generate electricity, propel ships, and to create medical and industrial isotopes. Nuclear energy can also be used in the form of weapons, but this application is controversial and is typically avoided if possible.
