G.KUMARA PILLA …കുമാരപ്പിള്ള

Early Life and Education:
G. Kumarapilla, a distinguished poet, Gandhian, and educator, was born on August 22, 1923, in Vennimala near Kottayam, Kerala. His parents were Peringara P. Gopalapilla and Parvathi Amma. He received his primary education at Peringara Government Higher Secondary School (formerly Government Upper Primary School, Peringara). Later, he pursued his higher education at Changanassery S.B. College and obtained his post-graduation in literature from Nagpur University.

Career and Contributions:
After completing his education, Kumarapilla worked as a clerk in Mumbai and later in the Secretariat. He also served as a lecturer at University College. Apart from his academic career, he actively participated in India’s freedom struggle, particularly involved with the Kochi Prajamandal during 1944-46. He was deeply influenced by Gandhian principles and advocated for civil rights and prohibition of alcohol in the Gandhian spirit.

Kumarapilla’s literary contributions were significant. He was a member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Executive Committee from 1961 to 1969 and also served on the Kerala University Senate. One of his notable works is the poem ‘Hridayathin Romancham,’ which was featured in Aravindan’s film ‘Uttarayanam.’
