BIOGRAPHY OF ANNIE BESANT

  • Annie Besant (1847-1933) was a prominent British socialist,women’s rights activist  and social reformer.
  • She was born on 1847 in London,England to a middle-class family.
  • She was well educated and became a Teacher in her late teens.
  • She became an important figure in the “Theosophical Movement” which wasa religious and philosophical system that sought to unite different religious traditions.
  • She was a leader in the Indian independence movement and a strong fighter for women’s rights.
  • In 1893, she was elected as the President of the Theosophical Society.
  • In the late 19th century, Besant joined the “Fabian Society”, a socialist organization that aim to bring about social reform through independent action.
  • She also wrote a number of books on socialism and became a leader in the Indian National Congress.
  • Besant was also a strong supporter of birth control and organized several national and international congresses on the subject.
  • Throughout her life, Besant was a supporter of religious freedom, universal education, labor rights and the upliftment of women.
  • She worked tirelessly to bring about positive change in the world.
  • She died in 1933, leaving behind a legacy of social activism and reform.
