Blood transfusion is a medical procedure in which blood or a blood component is transferred from one person (donor) into another person’s bloodstream. The purpose of a blood transfusion may be to replace lost blood components, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, clotting factors, or platelets. Blood transfusions can also be used to treat a severe reaction to a drug, to treat anemia, or to treat a condition caused by a lack of certain antibodies.
