The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is composed of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. It is responsible for controlling voluntary and involuntary body functions, such as breathing and heart rate, and processing sensory information from the body and environment. The spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of nerve fibers that runs from the base of the brain down the back. It carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body, enabling movement and sensation.
