WHAT IS A DESERT

  • DESERT’S are large, extremely dry areas of land with few vegetation.
  • DESERT’S receives an average annual rain fall less than 250 mm(25 cm)
  • Approximately “one third of the EARTH’S land surface” is DESERT .

TYPES OF DESERT 

  • PRIMARLY, There Are 4 Types Of Desert.
  1. HOT AND DRY DESERT
  2. COLD WINTER DESERT
  3. COASTAL DESERT
  4. COLD DESERT

1)HOT AND DRY DESERT

  • These areas experiences very hot temperature through out the year.
  • Rainfall is very are in these deserts.
  • In some regions of this desert Temperature will be above 45DC.
  • Example of HOT AND DESERT is SAHARA DESERT MOJAVE DESERT etc.

2)COLD WINTER DESERT

  • COLD WINTER DESERT’S are also known as “SEMI – ARID DESERT”
  • There DESERT’S have a long summer with no rainfall and small rainfalls in winter.
  • Compared to HOT AND DRY DESERT,COLD WINTER DESERT’S have a cooler Temperature.
  • Example of COLD WINTER DESERT’S are GREAT BASIN DESERT,MONTANE DESERT etc.

3)COASTAL DESERT

  • COASTAL DESERT’S have long warm summers and cool Winters.
  • The Maximum Annual Temperature is 13 – 24DC and minimum is about 5DC
  • These Deserts meets ocean.
  • Example of COASTAL DESERT’S are ATACAMA DESERT,NAMIB DESERT etc.

4)COLD DESERT

  • COLD DESERT’S are also known as POLAR DESERT’S
  • They are cold through out the year.
  • They Receive Rainfall around 15 to 25 cm during Winter.
  • Example of COLD DESERTS are ARCTIC POLAR DESERT, ANTARCTICA POLAR DESERT.
