The endometrium is the innermost layer of the uterus. It is a soft, spongy tissue made up of glands and blood vessels that lines the cavity of the uterus. During a normal menstrual cycle, the endometrium thickens and becomes more vascular in preparation for implantation of a fertilized egg. If no egg is implanted, the endometrium sheds, resulting in menstruation. The endometrium plays a major role in fertility, as it is essential for the implantation of a fertilized egg.
