Sir Humphry Davy’s experiment to divide water involved the use of electricity. He used a battery to pass an electric current through a container of water. This caused the water to break down into its constituent elements of hydrogen and oxygen. The two gases rose to the top of the container and were collected separately.Henry Cavendish’s experiment to divide sugar involved heating the sugar until it melted and then passing a current of electricity through the molten sugar. The result was that the sugar was broken down into its elements of carbon and oxygen. Cavendish observed that the carbon settled at the bottom of the container as a black powdery substance.
