The spinal nerves are the peripheral nerves of the vertebral column. They are formed from the ventral and dorsal roots of the spinal cord. The ventral root contains the motor axons and the dorsal root contains the sensory axons. The two roots come together to form a spinal nerve which exits the vertebral column at a neural foramen. The spinal nerve then divides into a dorsal ramus and a ventral ramus which supply the muscles and skin of the back and the limbs, respectively.
