Homo erectus is an extinct species of the human genus which lived from about 1.9 million to 135,000 years ago. It is one of the earliest known species of the genus Homo. Homo erectus was the first human ancestor to have a larger brain than its predecessors, and was the first to migrate out of Africa and colonize Eurasia. It is believed to have been the first human species to make and use fire, and to have had rudimentary tools and hunting capabilities. It is also thought to have been the first hominin to cook its food.
