A magnetic compass is a navigational instrument used to determine direction relative to the Earth’s magnetic poles. It consists of a magnetized pointer (usually marked on the North end) free to rotate on a pivot, making it possible to align itself with the Earth’s magnetic field. It is one of the oldest navigational tools, used since classical antiquity.
