A moving coil microphone is a type of dynamic microphone that uses a magnetized coil of wire suspended in a cylindrical magnet. The coil moves when sound waves cause the diaphragm of the microphone to vibrate, which in turn causes the coil to move within the magnetic field. The movement of the coil within the magnetic field induces an electrical current that is then amplified and sent to the output of the microphone. The moving coil microphone has been used in many professional audio applications since the early 1900s and is still the most commonly used type of microphone today.
