The ovary is an essential organ of the female reproductive system that produces the hormones estrogen and progesterone, as well as the egg cells required for reproduction. It is located in the pelvic cavity and is made up of two parts, the left and right ovary. Each ovary is about the size of an almond and is connected to the uterus by the fallopian tube. The ovaries are responsible for the release of an egg (ovulation) during the menstrual cycle and for producing hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, fertility, and other bodily functions.
