INTRODUCTION
- FIRST ASIAN to RECEIVE NOBEL PRIZE.
- HE WAS AWARDED NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE IN 1913.
- RABINDRANATH TAGORE was a Bengal poet, song composer, short story writer and a painter who introduced new forms in literature.
- He is considered as the outstanding artist of early 20th century.
- The national anthem of INDIA “JANA GANA MANA” is written by RABINDRANATH TAGORE.
- BANGLADESH NATIONAL ANTHEM “AMAR SHONAR BANGLA” was also written by him.
“A WALK THROUGH HIS LIFE”
- RABINDRA NATH TAGORE was born on 7th may 1861 to DEBENDRA NATH TAGORE and SARADA DEVI.
- His mother died in his early child hood and he was looked after mostly by servants.
- His brother “SATYENDRANATH TAGORE”was the first Indian to clear “INDIAN CIVIL SERVICE”.
- He avoided schooling .Most of his knowledge were from the books he read.
- He wrote poetry at the age of Eight.
- His father wanted to make him a lawyer. So he was sent to England. There he joined a public school.
- Then he joined “UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LONDON” but again he left the college without completing education.
- In 1870,after incomplete studies in England he returned to INDIA.
- In 1880, he published several poetry books and completed “MANASI”in 1890. MANASI contains some of his best known poems.
- In 1891, he went to East Bengal to manage his family’s estates.There he stayed in a houseboat on the “PADMA RIVER”.
- When he was staying in the house boat he came in close contact with the village peoples.His sympathy for the village peoples later become the inspiration for much of his works.
- During these years, he published the poetry collection ‘THE GOLDEN BOAT'[1894].
- After spending ten years in his family’s estate,in 1901 he founded an experimental school in west Bengal at “SHANTINIKETAN”
- He settled permanently at the school, which became “VISVA BHARATHI UNIVERSITY” In 1921.
- Between “1902 and 1907″his lost his wife and two children.Their death made him depressed and this is reflected in his later poetry”GITANJALI”
- In 1913,he received”NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE”For his work “GITANJALI”being the “FIRST ASIAN TO RECIEVE NOBEL PRIZE.
- In 1915,he was awarded a”KNIGHTHOOD”by the BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
- But in 1919,as a protest against the “JALLIAN WALLA BAGH MASSACRE”he returned the title of” KNIGHTHOOD”by the British government.
- In late 1920’s,when he was in his 60’s,he took up painting and created works that won him a place among India’s leading artists.
- He died on august 7th 1941.
