Rutherford’s planetary model of the atom is a model of the atom proposed by physicist Ernest Rutherford in 1911. According to the model, the atom consists of a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons which are distributed in a series of shells or orbits around the nucleus. The electrons are held in their orbits by the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged nucleus and the negatively charged electrons. This model was later replaced by the Bohr model of the atom.
