Sublimation is the process of a substance transitioning directly from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid phase. Separation is the process of separating two or more substances from a mixture. Separation can be used to separate the components of a mixture as part of the sublimation process. For example, a solid sample containing two substances can be separated using a technique such as mechanical separation (e.g. sieving), filtration, evaporation, or centrifugation. Once the components of the mixture have been separated, they can then be subjected to sublimation. This process can be used to purify substances and remove unwanted components.
