A synapse is the small gap between two neurons that allows them to communicate with each other. When an impulse (action potential) is generated in one neuron, it is transmitted across the synapse to the next neuron. This is done by a process called neurotransmission. Neurotransmitters are released from the presynaptic neuron and bind to receptors on the
neurotransmission . This binding triggers an electrical or chemical change in the postsynaptic neuron that can then generate an action potential in the next neuron.
