The vas deferens, also known as the ductus deferens, is a tube in the male reproductive system that carries sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory ducts in the pelvic region. It is part of the spermatic cord, which also contains the testicular blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and the cremaster muscle. The vas deferens is about 30 to 40 cm long, and is a muscular tube that contracts rhythmically to propel sperm towards the ejaculatory duct. The walls of the vas deferens contain smooth muscle fibres that help to propel the sperm forward, as well as connective tissue and a layer of mucous membrane that secretes lubricating mucus. The ends of the vas deferens are joined to the seminal vesicles, which produce the seminal fluid that mixes with the sperm to form semen.
