CHARLES BABBAGE was the first person in this world to design a Mechanical computer.
His design served as the Base or Blue print for other computer machines developed later.
He also invented an “OPTHALMOSCOPE” which is used in Eye Examinations.
A JOURNEY THROUGH HIS LIFE
CHARLES BABBAGE was born on 1791 in LONDON, ENGLAND
He attended KING EDWARD VI SCHOOL, but due to his poor health he was sent back home.
Later he attended another ACADEMY. In this ACADEMY BABBAGE found interested in learning Mathematics.
In 1810,He started his studies at “TRINITY COLLEGE “CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND
In 1812,He moved his studies to “PETER HOUSE COLLEGE” CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND.
He graduated in 1814,and became a “LECTURER IN ASTRONOMY “at “ROYAL INSTITUTION”
In 1816,He was elected as a “FELLOW OF ROYAL SOCIETY “(FRS)
BABBAGE began building a small calculation Engine in 1819 and it was completed in 1822. This Engine is known as “DIFFERENCE ENGINE 0”
DIFFERENCE ENGINE 0 Calculated and printed Mathematical tables.
The “BRITISH GOVERNMENT” showed interest in this Machine and BABBAGE was given money to start building a full scale Engine. This full scale Engine is named as “DIFFERENCE ENGINE 1”
In 1832,a small portion of “DIFFERENCE ENGINE 1 was built. But due to high cost the work stopped in 1833.
In 1837, BABBAGE started interested in building a more problem solving Engine, Powerful and better than “DIFFERENCE ENGINE 1”.
In 1842,the British Government decided to stop funding to BABBAGE.
During 1846 and 1849,He designed a new Improved Engine named as “DIFFERENCE ENGINE 2”
But due to the lack of funding,he was unable to finish his work for new Engine.
These Mechines were considered as the “FIRST MECHANICAL COMPUTER” ever to he invented.
Though the machines he developed were large size and mechanical, the basic “concept of modern computer” is same as his machine.
He died in -1871 at the age of 79.
