  INTRODUCTION

  • CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS is known as the “MAN WHO DISCOVERED AMERICA”
  • CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS was an “ITALIAN EXPLORER AND NAVIGATOR”
  • His Discovery of America led to the “COLONIZATION OF AMERICA” by “EUROPEAN COUNTRIES”.

A VOYAGE THROUGH HIS LIFE

  • CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS was born in 1451 in the “REPUBLIC OF GENOA”,ITALY.
  • As a teenager, he participated in several trading voyages.
  • In 1476,he made his first voyage into the ATLANTIC OCEAN. But his ship was attacked by French peoples and the ship was burned. He had to swim back to the “Portuguese shore”
  • He settled in Portugal and married ‘FELIPA PERESTRELLO”
  • After the death of his wife, he moved to SPAIN.
  • The Asian islands near INDIA and CHINA were at that time famous for their spices and gold, making them attractive destinations for Europeans.
  • Columbus designed a sea route which he thought will so quicker and easier to reach “Asia from ATLANTIC”.
  • He proposed a voyage plan to the PORTUGUESE KING but  his plan was rejected.
  • In 1486,He went to SPANISH KING FERDINAND 2 and QUEEN ISABELLA with his plan but there also his plan was rejected.
  • In 1492,KING FERDINAND 2 and QUEEN ISABELLA accepted to give money for his VOYAGE PLAN.
  • In august 1492,COLUMBUS left SPAIN with there ships.

  • On October 12,1492,after 36 days of voyage he and his men set foot on an island in the present day AMERICA.
  • COLUMBUS and his men continued their journey, reaching the islands of Cuba (which he thought was china)and Hispaniola(which he thought was Japan).
  • In 1493,he returned to Spain and submitted the reports.His reports were happy welcomed by the Royal court.
  • In  1493,he set on his “SECOND EXPEDITION” and explored more islands in the “CARIBBEAN OCEAN”.
  • Convincing the QUEEN about the riches in “HISPANIOLA” he established a forced labor policy for the “exploration of gold” in HISPANIOLA.
  • But his calculations gone wrong. The Labour force was not able to explore Gold. This provoked the QUEEN.
  • The QUEEN sent a Royal official who arrested COLUMBUS. His authority as the “GOVERNOR OF THE INDIES” was also cancelled by the QUEEN.
  • After convincing “KING FERDINAND” that one more voyage will being abundant riches, he went on his last voyage in 1502,for a route to the INDIAN OCEAN.
  • A storm destroyed one of his ships, and Columbus and his men reached CUBA. From CUBA, He and his men were taken back to Spain in 1504.
  • He died due to an infection on 20th may,1506.
