SATHYAJITH RAY is considered as “INDIA’S MOST IMPORTANT DIRECTOR” so far.
It is often said that “To have not see the films of Sathyajith Ray is to have lived in the world without ever having seen the moon and the sun”.
He is INDIA’S FIRST AND ONLY OSCAR WINNER DIRECTOR (1992) for his best creations such as “PATHER PANCHALI”, “CHARULATHA” AND APUR SANSAR.
A WALK THROUGH HIS LIFE
SATHYAJITH RAY was born on 2nd may 1921 in CALCUTTA .
His family was prominent in the fields of art and literature.
He entered government school in Bengal and then studied at “PRESIDENCY COLLEGE”, CALCUTTA.
In 1940, he attended “SHANTINIKETAN SCHOOL” operated by “RABINDRANATH TAGORE” in CALCUTTA .
In 1943, after his studies he got a job in British owned advertising company as an art director.
Among the book he read the NOVEL “PATHER PANCHALI” by “BIBHUTI BHUSHAN BANARJEE”influenced him and he thought the possibilities of visualising them.
In 1955, his First movie “PATHER PANCHALI” was released. It was a Classical and Commercial success.
In 1956, “PATHER PANJALI received a “MAJOR AWARD AT CANNES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL”besides ten international prizes.
With the money he received from PATHER PANJALI, he makes the other two films of the Continuation of PATHER PANJALI

He directed 26 Films, including Feature Films, Documentaries and telly films.
He Received many major awards in his career including 32 INDIAN NATIONAL FILM AWARDS, A GOLDEN LION, A GOLDEN BEAR, 2 SILVER BEARS ETC.
He Received the OSCAR AWARD in 1992.
In 1992, the “GOVERNMENT OF INDIA” honoured him with the BHARATH RATNA”.
He died on 23rd April 1992.
