SUGATHA KUMARI is an “INDIAN POET” and “ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST” from “GODS OWN COUNTRY,KERALA,INDIA”.
She founded “PRAKRITHI SAMARAKHANA SAMITHI” for the “PROTECTION OF NATURE”.
She also founded “ABHAYA” for the mentally ill peoples. “ABHAYA” also serves as a “home for the homeless women’s”.
She was the “Former chairperson of the KERALA STATE WOMEN’S COMMISSION” in 2001.

SUGATHA KUMARI was born in ARANMULA,PATHANAMTHITTA on 3rd JANUARY,1934.
Her Mothers name was “V.K KARTHIYANI” and Fathers name was ‘BODHESWARAN”.
After completing her “degree” from the UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, THIRUVANATHAPURAM, she took a “MASTERS DEGREE IN PHILOSOPHY” in 1955.
After her studies, she married “DR.K.VELAYUDAN NAIR”.
Her first poem was published in a weekly journal in 1957.
In 1968,she received “KERALASAHITHYA AKADEMI AWARD” for “PATHIRAPPOOKAL”.
In 1970, She led a successful nation wide movement known as “SAVE SILENT VALLEY MOVEMENT”.
“SAVE SILENT VALLEY MOVEMENT” was aimed to “SAVE SILENT VALLEY, “one of the oldest natural forest in the Country”.
In 1978,she won the “KENDRA SAHITYA ACADEMY AWARD” for “RAATRIMAZHA”.
Her other famous works include AMBALAMANI, MANALEZHUTHU, SWAPNABOOMI, MUTHUCHIPPI etc.
Environmental issues and other social problems are also portrayed in her poetry’s.
She was the first person to receive “INDIRA PRIYADARSHINI VRIKSH MITRA AWARD” from the “GOVERNMENT OF INDIA” for her efforts in the conservation of Environment.
In 2006,she received “PADMA SHRI” regarding his contribution to the field of literature.
She presently stays at THIRUVANANTHAPURAM.
